From 1999 to 2003, the coins were available with the African bush elephant on the reverse in a new design each year and released on behalf of the nation of Zambia. In 2004, the series transitioned to the nation of Somalia and has continued to be issued on behalf of the nation from the Horn of Africa.
Somalias coat of arms is featured on the obverse of the 2021 Somalia Silver Elephant Coins. The design on this side includes a crowned shield with a background of horizontal lines and a single star in the center, similar to the national flag of the Somali Republic. The shield is supported on either side by leopards with fern leaves and spears crossed below the shield and draped in a banner. There is a beaded edge around the border of the design field.
